So today I decided to do something I thought I wouldn't do. I dropped a main character from the book. Nick, to be exact.
It was a hard choice to make but Im glad that i did it, originally I wanted to have 5 characters to "play" from if the book were to be a game. But going on my own interpretation of Nick and his personality with the group it just wouldn't have worked. The chemistry was completely wrong.
Nick's personality and designs were based on the stereotypical "tough guy" in the video games world. A character that isn't very approachable in the team and often causes the most angst. Originally this what I thought I wanted from my characters. One boisterous, one calm, one gentle and one hot headed. (Coby, Murrey, Sanza and Serah). The for personalities complimented each other nicely and the addition of a fifth just seemed to stir things up more than they needed to for the situation and group dynamic.
Im a little sad and glad at the same time that I've let Nick go. I liked his character and might very well develop him as my own character outside of university to take him further but he just didn't seem to fit into this world I was making. His story didn't seem plausible enough.
On the up side though its give me more time to work on filling up more pages of the book related to the infected rather than a character that I didn't want to include. If i had have included him the work wouldn't have been up to scratch as I wouldn't have enjoyed designing more things for him as part of the games character design. So what I've lost in a main character I've made up with about 9 new pages of extra work on the infected animals which I would say is a fair trade.
